TV and stereo
For the TV and streaming, use the Xfinity remote shown on the right below. Press ⌂ (home) to return to the main screen, or the microphone button to speak the name of a program etc.
Tip: The Xfinity streaming box plays through input HDMI 1 on the TV set. Unless you have changed input, this should be the default.
To play bluetooth from the stereo, use the Sony remote control on the left above. Pair your device with STR-DH590 (you may need to use the bluetooth button on the remote). See also the Sony manual if you need.
Alarm
It’s off. Leave it off. If for any reason it turns on or starts to alarm, turn it off using the PIN pad at the front door.

Thermostat
The Nest smart thermostat is located just inside the french doors to the back yard. Sometimes it’s too smart, and will change settings based on what it has “learned” and you’ll need to set it back.
Smart home devices
You can use the Google Home device in the dining room to ask for things like weather forecasts, music, and so on. Specific to our house are:
- “Hey Google, turn [on/off] the Dining Room light” — this gratuitously duplicates the light switch on the wall.
- “Hey Google, turn [on/off] the pantry light” — this is the preferred way to control the light in the pantry.
- “Hey Google, turn [on/off] the pavilion” — the Capri lights in the back yard pavilion normally come on at sunset and turn off at 2 am, but this command can override.
You can also control the Nest thermostat in this way if you like.
Emergency power
There is a large, automatic backup generator installed on the Madison St side of the house. In case of a power outage, this should start up automatically and restore power within 30 seconds or less. The internet equipment is on its own battery backup and should remain in operation without interruption.
Note: The generator runs a self-test every Monday at about 11 am, during which it will power up and run for about 5 minutes. Do not be alarmed!
Recycling/garbage
Recycling and garbage are located next to the wine fridge in the corner of the pantry. The compost container is located on the countertop next to the toaster, and its replacement bags are on the top shelf in the kitchen closet.
- Collection day: Tuesday (put out bins Monday night)
- Recycle, compost/green waste, and bottles are collected every week
- Garbage is collected every second week (schedule on side of fridge)
Dishwasher
The detergent is under the sink. Just fill the dispenser and close it (no need for a second dose), then press and hold start, then shut it. A solid red light shining on the floor means it’s running.
Laundry
In the basement. Use the detergent that is there and please clean the dryer filter before each load.
